The Maid Accused of an Affair Was Actually the Family's Long-Lost Heiress
The Accusation in the Parlor
The atmosphere inside the historic Sterling mansion was suffocatingly tense. Beneath the warm, amber glow of the massive brass chandelier, the family had gathered for what was supposed to be a quiet evening. Instead, it had dissolved into a nightmare. Victoria, elegant but fierce in her sleek crimson dress, stood in the center of the parlor. Her fingers were clamped tightly around the arm of Clara, the young auburn-haired maid who stood trembling in her dark gray uniform, clutching a silver tea tray.
Victoria’s eyes flashed with venom as she sneered at the terrified girl. "You've been chasing my husband for weeks, haven't you?" she hissed, her voice cutting through the silent room like a blade.
Clara’s eyes welled with tears. Her hands shook so violently that the porcelain cups on her tray rattled.
"I never spoke to him, ma'am. I swear, I only do my job,"she pleaded, her voice cracking with pure terror.
With a dramatic flourish, Victoria snatched a folded piece of paper from Clara’s tray, lifting it high in the air. "Then explain this love letter!" she yelled, looking around the room to ensure she had everyone's attention. She expected her husband, Arthur, to look guilty. But as Arthur stepped forward from the crowd of onlookers, his face was a mask of utter confusion.
Arthur, handsome in his tailored blue blazer, gently took the folded note from Victoria's hands. As his eyes scanned the elegant, cursive script, his face paled. The anger drained from him, replaced by a stunned, hollow expression.
"This... this isn't a love letter to me,"Arthur murmured, his voice barely a whisper.
"This is my mother's handwriting."
The parlor fell dead silent. Before Victoria could speak, Charles, a distinguished older gentleman in a dark tuxedo and a lifelong friend of the family, stepped forward. He looked at Clara with a mixture of pity and deep regret.
"No, Victoria,"Charles revealed, his voice heavy with decades of guilt.
"That note is not what you think. This girl is the baby Arthur's mother paid to have taken away twenty years ago."
