Previously: When nanny Clara is wrongfully arrested for theft, her young charges sob hysterically. But when their father returns home, a shocking truth about his own mother comes to light.

The Matriarch's Trap

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs as he knelt to comfort his sobbing boys. Leo threw his arms around his father’s neck, pointing a trembling finger at his grandmother. Victoria stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply on the limestone floor. "Julian, thank goodness you're here," she said, her voice dripping with artificial concern. "This girl has been stealing from us. I found my late mother's diamond-and-sapphire necklace hidden in her personal quarters."

Clara shook her head frantically, her tears splashing onto the polished floor.

"Mr. Sinclair, I swear on my life, I would never touch your family's heirlooms! I don't know how it got there!"
she pleaded, her eyes begging for him to believe her.

Julian looked at his mother, then at Clara. He knew his mother had never approved of Clara. Victoria had always wanted a high-society governess for the boys, someone she could control, rather than a warm, middle-class young woman who loved the children unconditionally. Since his wife's passing, Victoria had tried to dominate the household, but Julian had always stood his ground—until now.

"The evidence is clear, Julian,"
Victoria insisted, crossing her arms.
"Officer, please take her away. We cannot have a thief in this house."

But before Officer Davis could lead Clara out the door, little Toby stepped forward, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "Grandma is lying!" the four-year-old yelled, his voice echoing in the vast hallway. The entire room went dead silent. Even the police officer paused, looking down at the brave little boy. Victoria's face flushed a deep, angry crimson as she glared at her grandson, but Julian gripped Toby’s shoulders gently.

"Toby, what do you mean?"
Julian asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

Julian asked, his voice dangerously quiet.
