The Matriarch's Trap
Julian pushed past his mother, kneeling down to comfort his sobbing sons who immediately threw their arms around him. Clara stood by the police car, her head bowed in shame, though her heart screamed of her innocence. Julian looked up at the officer, his face pale with shock.
"Officer, what is the meaning of this? Why is Clara in handcuffs?" Julian demanded, his voice laced with authority.
Before the officer could speak, Eleanor stepped onto the porch, her heels clicking sharply on the stone. She folded her arms, her posture rigid and unyielding.
"She is a thief, Julian," Eleanor declared smoothly. "My diamond heirloom necklace—the one passed down from your grandmother—was found stuffed inside her staff locker this morning. I called the authorities myself."
Clara shook her head violently, her voice cracked with emotion. "Mr. Vance, I didn't touch it! I don't even know how it got there!"
Julian knew Clara. She had been the anchor of their lives since his wife's passing, showing his boys nothing but love and dedication. He refused to believe she was capable of such a crime. He turned to his mother, his brow furrowed in suspicion.
"There must be a mistake, Mother. Did anyone check the security cameras?" Julian asked.
"The cameras in the east wing were undergoing maintenance today," Eleanor replied dismissively. "The evidence is in her locker, Julian. Let the police do their job."
The officer prepared to place Clara into the back of the patrol car. But just as hope seemed entirely lost, seven-year-old Leo grabbed his father's sleeve, his tear-stained face filled with urgency.
"Daddy, wait!" Leo cried out. "Grandma is lying! I saw her go into Clara's room this morning with a shiny box! She told us she was just looking for a dust rag, but she was hiding something!"
