The Smashed Coffin

The air inside the quiet funeral home chapel was thick with the suffocating scent of white lilies and fresh wax. Under the soft yellow lighting, a small group of mourners dressed in deep black stood in stunned silence. But the solemn peace of the service had just been violently shattered. Standing before the velvet-draped stands was twenty-two-year-old Mia, the Sterling family's maid, her bright yellow uniform and white bib apron a stark, jarring contrast to the gloom. In her trembling hands, she gripped a heavy metal axe, its blade still resting near a jagged, smashed hole in the lid of the white wooden coffin.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, her voice cracking with raw emotion. Her wavy red hair was disheveled, and sweat beaded on her forehead.

Arthur, a fifty-nine-year-old man with thinning grey hair, took a menacing step forward. Clad in a dark charcoal blazer and black trousers, his face was flushed with a mixture of rage and terror. "Have you lost your mind?!" he yelled back, his voice echoing off the chapel's vaulted ceiling.

"I heard her! I heard her crying!" Mia tearfully pleaded, refusing to back down.

Before Arthur could grab her, a faint, muffled sound drifted from the splintered opening of the casket. It was a weak, airy whisper, but in the dead silence of the room, it sounded like a thunderclap. "No... don't do this to me..."

Mia’s eyes widened as she looked at the shocked crowd. "I washed her hair this morning," she insisted, her voice shaking with absolute certainty. "Her hands were warm."

Arthur looked around in sudden, wild panic, his composed facade crumbling. "Did you hear that?" he asked, though he seemed more desperate to cover it up than to seek the truth. Beside him, Eleanor, a seventy-three-year-old woman wearing a pearl necklace and a black wool dress, gasped in horror. She stepped forward, her frail hand gently touching the splintered wood. "My God... Emma?" she whispered.

Emma?" she whispered.
