Previously: When eighteen-year-old Toby broke rules to save a choking boy, his ruthless manager fired him on the spot. But the boy's father was about to teach the manager a lesson.

The Power Shifts in an Instant

The diner fell into a dead silence. Marcus’s face drained of color as the name "Dr. Michael Carter" echoed through the room. Dr. Carter wasn't just any doctor; he was the Chief of Medicine at the city's premier hospital and, more importantly to Marcus, the primary trustee of the commercial development board that owned the very land the diner stood on.

Marcus stammered, his bravado instantly vanishing. He raised his hands defensively, trying to salvage his position.

"Dr. Carter, please understand, it's a matter of restaurant policy and liability. I can't have kitchen staff leaving their stations. I was just—"

Dr. Carter cut him off with an icy glare that silenced the manager instantly.

"You were willing to let my son choke to death for the sake of a ticket order,"

Arthur said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and leftover terror. He turned his back on Marcus, dismissing him entirely, and looked at Toby. The young man stood there, still wearing his dark green t-shirt, his hands shaking slightly as he pulled off his black prep gloves. Toby was devastated; this job was his only source of income to support his elderly grandmother.

Dr. Carter placed a warm, reassuring hand on Toby’s shoulder.

"Where did you learn to perform a life-saving maneuver like that so perfectly?"

Toby swallowed hard, looking down.

"I wanted to be an EMT, sir,"

Toby whispered.

"I took the basic certification classes, but I had to drop out. My grandmother fell ill, and I couldn't afford the tuition anymore. I had to take this job to pay the rent."

Dr. Carter’s expression softened, a look of profound respect replacing his anger. He looked at Toby's worn-out shoes, his tired eyes, and the sheer humility in his posture. Meanwhile, Marcus was desperately trying to whisper apologies in the background, pleading for his job and his diner's reputation. But the doctor was already formulating a plan that would change Toby's life forever.
