Manager Fires Teen Who Saved Choking Boy, Only to Realize Who the Father Is
The clatter of heavy porcelain plates and the sizzle of grease on the flat-top grill usually defined the rhythm of the Golden Griddle Diner. Toby, a nineteen-year-old kitchen assistant wearing a dark blue t-shirt and black food-prep gloves, was scraping the grill when the rhythm shattered. Through the open kitchen window, he heard a desperate, wet gasp. Looking out, Toby saw seven-year-old Leo clawing at his throat, his face turning a terrifying shade of blue. Beside him, his father, Arthur, was panicking, frantically patting the boy's back to no avail. The busy diner seemed to freeze, patrons staring in paralyzed shock.
Toby didn't hesitate. He dropped his spatula and bolted toward the swinging kitchen doors. "Get back to work!" yelled Marcus, the bald, heavy-set manager, his voice booming over the din. But Toby ignored him, pushing past Marcus into the dining room.
Reaching the table, Toby slid behind Leo, locked his hands just below the boy's ribs, and delivered three sharp, upward thrusts. With a sudden gasp, a piece of hard candy flew from Leo’s throat. The boy drew in a ragged, sobbing breath, color returning to his cheeks. Before Toby could even catch his breath, Marcus stepped into his space, eyes blazing.
"You walked away from your station. You're fired. Pack your things,"
Marcus barked. The diner fell dead silent. But before Toby could process the blow, Arthur grabbed the teen’s arm, his grip firm and steady. "You saved my son," Arthur whispered, his eyes shining with tears. He quickly pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and spoke with absolute authority.
"This young man just saved a child's life. Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter."
”Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter."
