The Confrontation

Lawrence scoffed, crossing his thick arms over his chest. He looked at Dr. Michael Carter with a smug grin, completely unimpressed by the man's title. To Lawrence, this was his diner, and his word was absolute law. He didn't care who the father was; he wanted this insubordinate teenager out of his sight immediately.

"I don't care if you're the Pope," Lawrence barked, gesturing toward the exit. "This kid is a liability. He doesn't follow orders, and he's done working here. Pack your things, Connor, before I call the police for trespassing."

Connor’s heart sank into his stomach. Tears welled in his eyes as he thought about his mother and how they would pay rent next month. He began to strip off his black kitchen gloves, his shoulders slumping in defeat. But Dr. Carter didn't let go of Connor's arm. Instead, his grip tightened protectively, and his voice went ice-cold as he addressed the manager.

"You might want to hold your tongue, Lawrence," Dr. Carter said, his voice quiet but carrying a terrifying weight. "Because the person on the other end of this phone is Arthur Pendelton. Does that name ring a bell?"

The smug smile vanished from Lawrence’s face. Arthur Pendelton was the wealthy real estate mogul who owned this entire diner franchise, along with half the commercial properties in the city. Lawrence’s bald head began to glisten with sudden sweat. He swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure, but his voice trembled.

"Mr. Pendelton? Why would... why would you be speaking to him?" Lawrence stammered.

Dr. Carter held the phone up, putting it on speaker. A booming, furious voice echoed through the diner, loud enough for every customer to hear. It was indeed Arthur Pendelton, and he sounded absolutely livid.

"Lawrence, you absolute fool," Arthur roared through the speaker. "Dr. Carter is not only the Chief of Medicine at City Memorial, but he is also my primary partner in our charitable foundation. I have just heard how you treated a young hero who saved his son's life."
