The grand foyer of the Vance mansion was a masterpiece of cold, gleaming marble and towering columns, but to Mary, it had been a gilded cage. For four long years, she had polished the sweeping mahogany staircase, dusted the crystal chandeliers, and quietly watched the family who lived there. Today was supposed to be her final day. Her bags were packed, and her dark grey maid’s uniform felt heavier than ever as she knelt by her cleaning bucket, trying to wipe away her tears before anyone noticed.

Suddenly, the heavy silence of the estate was shattered by the sound of hurried footsteps. Down the grand staircase scrambled three little light-brown-haired boys. The triplets—Leo, Toby, and Sam—were dressed in their matching play clothes. Before Mary could even stand up, the boys sprinted across the polished marble floor, their faces tear-stained and desperate.

"Mommy! Mommy!"

The young boys threw themselves into Mary's arms with a force that nearly knocked her over. She dropped her sponge, wrapping her arms tightly around them as sob after sob racked her body. She buried her face in their soft hair, inhaling their scent one last time. Sam, wearing his blue tracksuit, clung to her collar, his voice trembling with pure terror.

"Mommy, please don't leave us. Don't go!"

They had been preparing to bid a cold, formal farewell to their housekeeper. Instead, they were witnessing a scene that made no sense.
