Previously: A billionaire real estate mogul thought he could demolish a historic atelier. He didn't count on the master clockmaker and a centuries-old imperial land patent.

Armand watched Grace, his smirk faltering as she ignored his ultimatum. He expected panic, perhaps tears, but only met a quiet defiance that unnerved him. He paced, his expensive shoes clicking sharply on the marble, the sound grating against the steady ticking of the clocks. He was accustomed to immediate obedience, to the world bending to his will. This stoic old woman, surrounded by her anachronistic machines, was an anomaly he couldn’t comprehend.

Grace: "You spent sixty million buying this coastline, Armand, but you never bothered to check who actually owns the seabed bedrock."

With a deliberate, almost tender movement, Grace reached for a massive 1870 celestial grandfather clock, its brass pendulum swinging with stately grace. From its intricate workings, she produced a slender brass key. She inserted it into a hidden escapement gear, and with a soft, resonant click, disengaged the primary mechanism. Armand’s irritation morphed into a flicker of unease. His left eyebrow twitched. He saw her retrieve a small, cylindrical brass canister. Inside, she revealed an ancient vellum document, sealed with the unmistakable imperial wax crest of Napoleon III and the French Maritime Admiralty. The storm outside seemed to hold its breath.

The Imperial Patent

Grace unrolled the parchment, its age evident in the brittle texture and faded ink. She laid it flat on the workbench, the ornate crest facing Armand. His confident demeanor began to crumble as he recognized the symbols of a bygone era, a time when land rights were absolute and divinely ordained. The casual arrogance that had defined him moments before evaporated, replaced by a dawning horror. He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing, the color draining from his face as another flash of lightning illuminated his sudden terror.

Grace: "This is the original 1870 Imperial Sovereign Land Patent—granting perpetual, inviolable jurisdiction of this entire headland to my clockmaker lineage."

Armand’s pupils contracted. He felt a cold dread seep into his bones, a feeling far more chilling than the sea spray misting through a slight gap in the balcony doors. He had built his empire on legal loopholes and aggressive acquisitions, always ensuring he was on the right side of the law, or at least, that he could afford the best lawyers to argue his interpretation. But this document, this artifact from a different age, spoke of a different kind of ownership, one that predated his modern legal frameworks and seemed impervious to his wealth.
