The Boss's Judgment

The atmosphere crackled with a terrifying new energy. General Davis, a man whose reputation preceded him in hushed, fearful whispers, regarded Carter with an unnerving calm. The mob lieutenant, moments before so full of bluster and violence, now looked like a cornered rat, his arrogance replaced by a primal fear. Davis’s gaze was like ice, dissecting Carter’s every panicked flicker.

“You dare strike an innocent girl in my presence, Carter?” General Davis’s voice was deceptively soft, a low rumble that promised far more than mere displeasure.

Carter opened his mouth, a pathetic attempt at an excuse dying on his lips. He knew the code. He knew the consequences of drawing attention, of causing a scene, especially one involving violence against someone under the General’s – however fleeting – protection. Davis’s word was law, and defying it, especially in such a public and brutal manner, was an act of ultimate betrayal.

With a speed that belied his age and size, General Davis moved. It wasn’t a rush, but a swift, predatory lunge. His massive gloved hand clamped around Carter’s throat like a hydraulic vise. The lieutenant choked, clawing desperately at the iron grip as Davis lifted him effortlessly off his feet. The sound of Carter’s spine hitting the solid marble table was an explosive, concussive thud, cracking the thin layer of ice that had formed on its surface. Frosty debris scattered into the air.

“You just broke the sacred code, you treacherous dog!” General Davis bellowed, his voice now a thunderous roar that seemed to shake the very foundations of the cathedral.

Carter thrashed uselessly, his face contorting, veins bulging in his neck as he fought for air. His eyes, wide with terror, bulged from their sockets. Hannah, still kneeling in the snow, watched the scene unfold with a mixture of horror and disbelief. The man who had so brutally assaulted her was now at the mercy of an even more terrifying power. She saw the cold steel of a black snub-nose revolver appear in Davis’s hand as he pressed his forearm firmly into Carter’s pinned windpipe. The muzzle was pressed deliberately under Carter’s quivering chin.
