Previously: A vicious mob lieutenant's brutal assault on a waitress in a dockside tavern is met with swift, terrifying retribution by the feared mafia patriarch. Justice, or something darker, unfolds.

The Don's Judgment

The air in the tavern crackled with a new, terrifying tension. Julian Vance, moments before basking in the cruel satisfaction of his dominance, was now frozen, caught in the unblinking gaze of Don Edward Sterling. The patriarch’s words, delivered with a chilling finality, had extinguished Julian's bravado like a snuffed candle. The Don, a figure of immense power and lethal calm, was not one to tolerate insubordination, especially not when it involved public displays of brutality against the lowest rungs of their organization. Julian’s violent outburst against Grace was not just an act of cruelty; it was a profound insult to the order and respect the Don demanded.

Before Julian could stammer out a pathetic excuse, Don Sterling moved. It wasn't a hurried rush, but a predator's deliberate, explosive acceleration. His hand, adorned with a heavy, carved gold signet ring, shot out and clamped around Julian's throat like a hydraulic vise. With terrifying strength, the Don lifted the struggling mob lieutenant off his feet, his own body a coiled spring of lethal intent. The polished marble table, a recent addition to the tavern's decor, became the stage for Julian's downfall.

"You think you can spill blood in my establishment and walk away?"

Don Sterling’s voice was a low growl, barely audible over the sickening crunch as Julian’s spine and skull impacted the unforgiving green marble. The concussive force sent glasses exploding into a thousand glittering shards, splashing the remaining amber liquor into the air like a fleeting, alcoholic mist. The stone itself cracked under the brutal impact, a deafening boom that echoed the finality of Julian's actions.

Julian thrashed uselessly, his airways crushed, his body betraying him. His eyes bulged, bloodshot and wide with terror, as purple veins throbbed violently across his temples. He tried to scream, to plead, but only a choked, gurgling sound escaped his ruined throat. He was utterly at the Don’s mercy, his arrogance replaced by the raw, animalistic fear of a cornered rat.

Don Sterling leaned in, his imposing figure blotting out the dim light. He pressed Julian’s crushed windpipe against the wet, fractured marble with his forearm. His silver beard brushed Julian's ear as he extended a protective hand backward, a subtle gesture that shielded the terrified waitress, Grace, from the gruesome spectacle. Then, with a flick of his wrist, a stiletto blade appeared. The cold, sharp steel was pressed deliberately into the quivering flesh beneath Julian's twitching eye.

"Beg her for your breath, Julian, before I feed your carcass to the harbor."

The venom in the Don’s whisper was absolute. Julian, consumed by excruciating agony and raw panic, could only weep, tears streaming down his bruised temples, disappearing into the shattered marble beneath him. His life hung precariously by a thread, dictated by the whim of the man who had always been the ultimate authority.
