The annual Sterling charity gala was always an exercise in high-society opulence, but for Elena, it felt like entering a lion's den. Dressed in a modest white silk shirt and a simple black skirt, she stood in stark contrast to the glittering jewels and gold gowns surrounding her. Elena had always kept a low profile, hiding her past to build a quiet life with her husband, Marcus. Evelyn had cornered Elena near the center of the grand ballroom. Wearing a stunning, heavy gold silk gown, Evelyn looked down her nose at her daughter-in-law. "You don't belong among us, Elena," she hissed, loud enough for nearby guests to hear. "You are a plain, penniless nobody who tricked my son."
