The Uninvited Marksman

Amber stood at the dusty edge of the desert shooting range, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her worn, dark grey zip-up hoodie. The midday sun beat down relentlessly on the rough-hewn wooden shelter, casting long, stark shadows across the shooting benches. Around her stood men clad in expensive tactical gear, their eyes filled with amusement and dismissal. To them, she was just a desperate mother looking for a basic security job to pay her daughter’s medical bills.

Jeff, the chief instructor, adjusted his sunglasses and patted the heavy bolt-action rifle resting on the wooden table. He didn't bother hiding his smirk.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line," Jeff said, his voice carrying over the dry desert wind. "Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

The spectators chuckled. Amber didn't say a word. She stepped forward, her posture shifting in a split second. The nervous, slouching woman vanished, replaced by someone with absolute, lethal focus. She lifted the heavy rifle from its case. The metal felt cold, heavy, and entirely natural in her hands. She raised the weapon, pressed the stock firmly against her shoulder, and aligned the sights.

Bang.

The sound shattered the desert silence. Downrange, a spinning metal target clanged loudly. Before anyone could blink, Amber cycled the bolt with blinding, practiced speed.

Bang.

Another hit.

"Did she hit both?" Jeff muttered, his sunglasses slipping down his nose as his jaw dropped.
"You gave me seven shots," Amber replied calmly.

She fired five more times in rapid, rhythmic succession. Every single bullet found its mark dead center, leaving the metal targets spinning in a chaotic, ringing chorus. When the chamber clicked empty, she lowered the rifle. The range was absolutely silent. The men who had been laughing just moments ago stared at her in sheer awe. Jeff could only stare, realizing he had vastly underestimated the woman standing before him.
