Previously: When three corrupt deputies tied a young woman in uniform to a freezing tree, they thought they had won. They had no idea she was playing a much bigger game.

A Dangerous Game of Authority

For months, the small county had been a black hole for military-grade equipment, with shipments vanishing from the local depot without a trace. Deputy Miller and his accomplices had grown wealthy off the black market, confident that their badges shielded them from suspicion. When Clara had arrived in town posing as a low-level administrative clerk, they assumed she was an easy target who had poked her nose where it didn't belong. They had lured her to the isolated woods to terrify her into silence.

"You should have stayed in your office, little lady," Jenkins sneered, resting his hand on his holster. "We run this county. You sign the inventory release forms, and maybe we let you walk out of these woods before you freeze to death."

Clara spat the melting snow from her lips, her gaze hardening. The trembling in her shoulders stopped instantly. The tears on her face dried in the freezing wind, replaced by a cold, calculating stare that made Miller instinctively take a step back. The submissive girl they thought they had captured vanished, replaced by a figure of absolute authority.

"You think this uniform is a costume?"

Clara asked, her voice steady and devoid of fear. "You asked if I was a general. I might not wear the stars on my shoulders today, but I hold the commission of the United States Army CID. And you three just committed federal kidnapping."

Miller scoffed, trying to mask the sudden spike of adrenaline in his chest. "You're bluffing. No one knows you're out here."

Clara laughed again, but this time it wasn't a sob. It was the chilling laugh of someone who had already won. "Look at my lapel, Miller. That's not a standard brass pin. It's a military-grade satellite transmitter. And my team has been listening to every single word."
