A Mother Called the Police on Her Daughter, But the K9 Exposed the Truth
Previously: When Diane called the police on her young daughter Lily, she thought her scheme was foolproof. But she didn't expect the highly-trained K-9 unit to sniff out the real criminal sitting at her dining table.
The Accusation and the Dog's Instinct
Officer Miller patted Jax's side, signaling the dog to ease his barking, though the German Shepherd remained highly alert, his ears pinned forward. The officer knelt down to Lily's eye level, his tone softening.
"Are you hurt, sweetheart? Can you tell me what happened here?"
Before Lily could choke out a response through her tears, Diane stood up from the dining table, her face twisted in a mask of artificial concern.
"Don't let her fool you, Officer," Diane interrupted quickly. "She’s a thief. My heirloom diamond necklace went missing this afternoon, worth fifty thousand dollars. I saw her sneaking around my bedroom, and when I confronted her, she ran down here, grabbed that plate, and threw it to the ground to hide what she was doing. She probably swallowed it or threw it down the vent!"
Lily shook her head frantically, her blonde curls flying.
"I didn't take it, Mommy! I swear! I was just hungry!" she wailed.
Leo finally looked up from his phone, a smirk playing on his lips. "She's lying, Officer. She always steals stuff."
Officer Miller stood up, his eyes narrowing. He had been a K-9 handler for eight years, and he knew how to read both dogs and humans. Jax wasn't barking at Lily because she was a criminal; Jax was barking because he was highly agitated by the intense fear in the room, and because his training was telling him something else.
"Jax, search," Miller commanded quietly.
Instead of sniffing Lily or the spilled spaghetti, Jax immediately turned away from the crying girl. The dog bypassed the mess entirely, his nose glued to the floorboards as he trotted toward the dining table. Diane’s face suddenly drained of all color. She reached out to grab Leo's arm, her knuckles turning white. Jax began to circle Leo’s chair, his tail stiffening as his sniffing grew frantic.
