The silence that fell over the table was deafening. Helen sank to her knees, disregarding her expensive beige trousers as she looked at the bruised boy. Toby flinched slightly, pulling his thin shoulders inward as if expecting a blow. "Is this true?" Helen whispered, her voice trembling. "You saved my son?"

Toby nodded slowly, not making eye contact.

"I was just looking for food near the alley when I saw him run into the street,"

Toby murmured, his voice barely audible.

"The black SUV didn't even slow down. I just jumped. I didn't want him to get hurt."

As Helen reached out to gently touch Toby's bruised arm, her husband, Richard, hurried over, followed by two burly security guards. "Helen, what is going on here? Why is this street kid at our table? Guards, escort him out immediately," Richard ordered, his voice commanding and cold.

"No! Touch him and you're fired!" Helen snapped, standing up to shield Toby. She turned to her husband, her eyes blazing with fierce maternal protectiveness. "This boy saved Leo's life yesterday. While we were wondering why Leo came home with a scraped knee, this child was taking the brunt of an SUV's impact to keep our son breathing."

Richard gasped, looking from Leo's tear-stained face to Toby's battered frame. The realization hit him like a physical blow. But Helen wasn't finished. She looked at Toby's bruised face and realized the horror of the situation. This boy had saved her son, yet he had been left to sleep on the freezing streets, injured and hungry, while they celebrated in luxury. She demanded to know why he hadn't gone to a hospital, only for Toby to admit he had no family and was terrified of being locked away in a state facility.
