Helen felt her knees grow weak. She slowly walked over to the table, her anger completely evaporating, replaced by a wave of profound guilt and gratitude. She looked closely at Toby. The bruises on his face weren't just old scrapes; they were fresh, painful-looking welts. He was wearing tattered clothes that were damp and smelled of rain.

"Is this true?"

Helen whispered, her voice trembling as she knelt beside the young boy. Toby shrank back slightly, unused to the proximity of adults, but he nodded slowly.

"I saw the black car speeding around the corner,"

Toby said in a quiet, raspy voice.

"He didn't see the car coming because he was looking at his phone. I just jumped and pushed him into the grass. I got scraped up a bit, but he was safe."

Helen reached out, gently touching Toby's shoulder. He flinched slightly, which broke her heart even more.

"But these bruises... they aren't from a fall into the grass, are they?"

she asked softly, her maternal instincts screaming that something was terribly wrong.

Leo stepped forward, wiping his own tears. He explained that he had tracked Toby down to thank him, only to find him hiding in an alleyway near the school. Toby had been kicked out of his foster home. The abusive foster father had beaten him, blaming him for ruining his clothes when he dove to save Leo, and then locked him out in the cold.

Helen stared at Toby, horror rising in her chest. This brave child had risked his life to save her son, and his reward had been violence and abandonment. She looked at the plate of spaghetti, realizing it was the first real meal Toby had seen in days.
