A Wealthy Mother Confronts a Dirty Boy, Only to Learn He Saved Her Son
Previously: When Karen caught her son serving food to a bruised, homeless boy at a luxury gala, she was furious. But her anger turned to tears when she learned the truth.
The Shadow of a Hero
The bustling noise of the banquet hall seemed to fade into a dull hum as Karen stared at the young boy. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Just yesterday, Oliver had come home late, his clothes dusty, claiming he had simply tripped on his way back from the library. She had scolded him for his carelessness, never imagining that he had been inches away from a fatal accident.
Karen slowly knelt beside the table, ignoring the dust that rubbed off onto her expensive designer pants. She looked at the boy, whose name was Liam. He was no older than twelve, his cheeks hollow and his knuckles scraped raw.
"Is this true?"
Karen asked, her voice cracking.
"You saved my son?"
Liam nodded sheepishly, his voice barely a whisper.
"He was chasing a stray puppy,"
Liam murmured.
"He didn't see the black car speeding through the red light. I just... I just reacted. I'm glad he's okay, ma'am."
Before Karen could wrap her arms around the boy in gratitude, her husband, Richard, approached the table. Richard, a powerful real estate mogul whose company sponsored the gala, looked ready to demand security remove the intruder. But as his eyes locked onto Liam’s face, the color drained completely from Richard's cheeks.
Richard stumbled backward, his hand gripping the edge of the table for support. He stared at the silver, dented locket hanging from Liam’s neck—a locket bearing a very specific crest.
"Arthur's boy..."
Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and guilt.
"You're Liam Vance."
Karen looked up, confused by her husband's sudden pale complexion. She knew that name. Arthur Vance had been Richard’s former business partner who had mysteriously gone bankrupt and passed away years ago, leaving his family destitute. It was a tragedy Richard had always claimed he tried to prevent, but the look of absolute horror on her husband's face told a very different, much darker story.
