Previously: When Helen found her son serving spaghetti to a bruised, homeless boy at a luxury gala, she was furious. But her anger turned to tears when she learned the truth.

A Darker Truth Unfolds

The noise of the gala faded into a dull hum as Helen knelt in front of Toby. Her expensive blazer brushed against the dusty floor, but she didn't care. She gently reached out, her fingers hovering over the dark purple bruises on the boy's collarbone and arms. "Did you get these when you saved my son?" Helen asked, her voice thick with emotion.

Toby nodded slowly, refusing to meet her gaze.

"The black SUV... it was going so fast,"
he whispered, his voice barely audible.
"I saw the little boy step off the curb. I just jumped. The car clipped my shoulder and threw me into the gravel."

Helen’s heart ached with a mixture of intense gratitude and horror.

"Why didn't you go to the hospital? Why are you hiding here?"
she asked.

Toby shivered, wrapping his thin arms around himself.

"The driver stopped for a second,"
Toby explained, tears welling in his eyes.
"He rolled down the window. He didn't ask if I was okay. He yelled at me. He said if I told anyone, he’d make sure I disappeared. I was scared. I’m just a foster kid... nobody cares about me anyway."

Helen’s blood ran cold.

"Did you see him, Toby? Did you see the driver?"

Toby hesitated, then nodded.

"He was wearing a fancy suit. And he had a big gold ring with a black stone on his finger. His license plate had 'RICH' on it."

Helen felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her husband, Richard, drove a black Mercedes SUV. His custom license plate was indeed a variation of his name, and he wore a family heirloom—a heavy gold signet ring with an onyx stone. Just then, the heavy oak doors of the private room opened, and Richard walked in, looking impatient.

"Helen, there you are. The mayor is waiting for—"
He stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes fell on Toby.
