The bustling noises of the banquet seemed to fade into a distant hum. Helen knelt down, her expensive velvet blazer pressing against the polished marble floor. She looked at the bruised boy, whose hands were shaking as he gripped the edge of the chair. Tuesday was the day Leo had come home with scraped knees, claiming he had simply tripped on the school playground. Now, the horrifying truth was unraveling before her eyes.

"Is this true?" Helen whispered, her voice trembling as she reached out toward the young stranger. "You... you saved my son?"

The boy flinched slightly before nodding slowly. "I didn't want him to get hurt," Toby muttered, his voice barely audible over the distant orchestra. "I saw the car speeding. I just jumped. I'm sorry if I wasn't supposed to come here. Leo told me he would bring me some food if I waited by the door."

Helen felt a sharp pang of guilt pierce her chest. While she had been busy planning a lavish charity event to raise millions for abstract causes, a homeless child who had literally thrown his body in front of a speeding vehicle to save her only son was sitting in the dark, hungry and bruised.

She looked closer at Toby's bruised cheek and his swollen wrist. "Did you go to a hospital? Did anyone help you?" she asked, her maternal instincts completely taking over.

Toby shook his head. "I don't have anyone to take me, ma'am. I just hid in the alley until the pain got better."

Helen's heart shattered. She realized that while she had been living in absolute luxury, this brave young soul had been suffering in silence, completely neglected by the world after performing an act of ultimate heroism.
