Previously: When Sarah found her son Tommy sneakily feeding a bruised, dirty boy at a luxury gala, she was furious. But Tommy's tearful confession changed her life forever.

The Savior in the Shadows

Sarah dropped to her knees, completely ignoring how her expensive black cardigan dragged on the dusty floor. She looked directly into Billy's frightened eyes. Up close, she could see the painful purple bruises lining his arms and a nasty scrape along his cheekbone. This child had taken the brunt of an impact that could have killed her own son.

"Please don't be mad at him," Billy whispered, his voice barely audible. "I was just really hungry. I didn't mean to ruin your party."

Sarah's heart shattered.

"Oh, sweetheart, no,"
she choked out, reaching out gently to touch his shoulder.
"I am not mad. Tell me what happened. Why didn't you come to us? Why are you hurt like this?"

With Tommy sitting close beside him, Billy hesitantly explained his story. He was nine years old and had been living on the streets with his older brother after their family fell apart. Two days ago, he had been scavenging near the highway when he saw Tommy chase a runaway soccer ball right into the path of a speeding black SUV. Billy hadn't hesitated. He lunged forward, throwing his entire body weight into Tommy, sending them both tumbling into the dirt just as the vehicle roared past.

While Tommy had escaped with minor scratches, Billy had clipped the side of the vehicle. Terrified of getting into trouble or being separated from his brother by social services, Billy had run away and hid. He had survived on scraps until Tommy recognized him outside the banquet hall tonight and dragged him inside to feed him.

Sarah listened, her blood running cold at the thought of how close she had come to losing Tommy. She looked at the wealthy guests laughing in the main hall, completely oblivious to the real hero sitting in the shadows of their luxury. She knew she couldn't let this boy go back to the streets.
