The Encounter in the Alley

The autumn rain had left the concrete alleyways of the city slick and freezing. Twenty-year-old Emily gripped the warm paper bag in her hands, her heart aching as she looked at the young man shivering beneath a thin tarp. His face was smudged with dirt, and a nasty bruise lined his jaw. He looked no older than she was, abandoned and forgotten by the bustling city just a block away.

Stepping forward, Emily offered him the warm meal.

"Here, you can have it,"
she said softly, her voice trembling in the damp air.

The young man looked up, his eyes glassy with exhaustion and disbelief. He reached out with a trembling, dirty hand to accept the offering.

"Thank you,"
he whispered, his voice cracked from the cold. Overwhelmed by a sudden wave of empathy, Emily leaned down and hugged him, wanting to offer even a shred of human warmth to someone who clearly had none.

But the tender moment was shattered by a sharp gasp from behind. Sarah, Emily’s mother, came rushing down the alley, her gray wool overcoat flapping in the wind. Horrified to see her daughter embracing a stranger in a dark corner of the city, she grabbed Emily's arm and pulled her back with desperate strength.

"Emily, step back!"
Sarah commanded, her protective instincts flaring. She positioned herself between her daughter and the young man, her eyes wide with fear.

"Mom, he's hungry!"
Emily protested, tears stinging her eyes as she tried to pull away from her mother's tight grip.

Sarah opened her mouth to lecture her daughter about safety, but as she looked down at the shivering boy holding the burger, her words died in her throat. The dim light of the alley caught the boy's green eyes and the distinct, crescent-shaped scar near his temple. Sarah's breath hitched. She gasped in sudden, violent recognition. Her expensive leather purse slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the wet asphalt. Dropping to her knees in the dirt, she stared at him, her chest heaving as tears flooded her eyes.

"Oh my god, my son!"
Sarah wailed, throwing her arms around the stunned young man, holding him as if he might vanish into the mist.
