Previously: When Arthur’s mother fires their young maid Sarah, a hidden silver pocket watch reveals a devastating web of lies surrounding the tragic fate of Arthur’s late wife.

Arthur stepped between Sarah and the approaching security guards, his arm still wrapped protectively around his crying son. "Stand down," he commanded, his voice carrying an authority his mother had never heard from him before. He turned his full attention back to Sarah, whose tears were still falling onto the polished silver of the pocket watch.

"What did my mother keep, Sarah? Tell me."

The Hidden Truth

Eleanor descended the winding stairs, her heels clicking sharply against the wood.

"Arthur, do not listen to this girl. She is a thief and an opportunist. She crept into this house under a false name to rob us!"

"I didn't steal anything!"
Sarah cried out, pressing a small release button on the side of the silver pocket watch. The back of the watch popped open, revealing not gears, but a tiny, folded piece of paper and a small brass key.
"This belonged to Celeste. She died in a charity hospital two years ago, Arthur. She never abandoned Noah. She was forced out."

The air in the foyer turned ice-cold. Arthur looked from the key to his mother’s suddenly pale face.

"What is that key for, Mother?"
he asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

Sarah spoke quickly, desperate to get the words out before she could be stopped.

"Your mother kept Noah’s real birth certificate and Celeste's final letters. Celeste was pregnant, and your mother threatened to ruin her family if she didn't give up the baby and disappear. Celeste was too poor to fight her. But before she died, she sent me here to find the proof. It’s in the safe in the study. This key opens the hidden compartment inside it."

Eleanor gasped, her aristocratic composure finally shattering.

"She is lying! She made that up to extort us!"
But the panic in Eleanor's eyes told a completely different story. Arthur knew his mother’s tells, and right now, she looked guilty.
