The atmosphere in the grand foyer of the Sterling estate was suffocating. Sunlight filtered through the stained-glass windows, casting long, dramatic shadows across the winding mahogany staircase. Arthur stood at the base of the stairs, his chest heaving with a mixture of anger and confusion. In his arms, his five-year-old son, Noah, wept softly, his small hands clutching his father’s white shirt.

At the top of the stairs stood Eleanor, Arthur’s mother. Immaculate, stern, and unyielding in her cream silk blouse, she looked down at them like a queen surveying a failed rebellion. Beside the mahogany banister, Sarah, the young maid with dark brown curls, stood trembling in her black-and-white uniform. Her face was tear-stained, her hands desperately clutching a worn silver pocket watch.

"Why did you fire her?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing in the vast hallway. "Noah loves her. She has been nothing but gentle and devoted to this family."

Eleanor’s response was ice-cold. She took a slow step down the stairs, her gaze locked onto Sarah.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house," Eleanor replied, her voice dripping with disdain. "She is a fraud, Arthur. She doesn't belong here."

Arthur looked at Sarah, expecting a defense, but the young woman only sobbed harder. She pressed the silver pocket watch to her chest as if it were a shield.

"Celeste was my sister," Sarah tearfully whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession.

Arthur froze. The name of his late wife, who had tragically passed away four years ago under mysterious circumstances, sent a shockwave through his heart. He stared at the maid, seeing the resemblance for the first time in her dark curls and expressive eyes.

"Tell me the truth," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as he stepped closer.
"Your mother kept Noah's..." Sarah stammered, her voice shaking, before Eleanor sharply cut her off.
