The soft clinking of champagne flutes and the low hum of laughter drifted from the living room of their upscale home. It was supposed to be a night of celebration. Justin had just been named senior partner, a milestone he and Chloe had worked toward for years. Yet, while the guests mingled, Chloe stood alone in the luxurious kitchen, tears streaming down her face as she scrubbed grease from a heavy roasting pan.

She wore a bright yellow apron, a cruel "gift" forced upon her by Eleanor, Justin’s mother. To Eleanor, Chloe—a woman from a modest background—was never going to be good enough for her son, despite the fact that they shared a beautiful toddler daughter, Lily.

"My party is over. Get out of my house," Justin’s voice boomed, cutting through the ambient noise of the gathering.

Moments earlier, Justin had noticed Chloe's absence and walked into the kitchen, his brow furrowed in confusion. The scene before him made his blood run cold. His partner was weeping over a sink full of dirty dishes while his mother stood nearby, sipping her wine with an air of cold superiority.

"What's going on here?" Justin demanded, stepping in from the crowd, his forest green blazer sharp against the warm kitchen lights.

Eleanor had merely scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. "Don't be so dramatic, Justin. She just wanted to feel useful. After all, someone has to clean up."

Ignoring his mother, Justin walked over to Chloe. His hands were incredibly gentle as he untied the yellow apron from her waist. "Look at me," he whispered. "Did you really want to wash dishes during my party?"

Chloe looked up through her tears. "No," she sobbed. "She told me that my place was in the kitchen because I'm just the mother of your daughter, not your wife."

Incensed by his mother's cruelty, Justin pointed a finger at Eleanor, demanding she leave immediately before pulling Chloe into a tight, protective embrace.
