A Mother's Cruel Ultimatum

The bass from the sound system vibrated through the floorboards of the sprawling, open-plan luxury estate. Outside the kitchen, the city's elite laughed, clinked champagne glasses, and celebrated Dylan’s recent business success. But inside the kitchen, the atmosphere was suffocating. Hannah stood before the deep farmhouse sink, her shoulders shaking violently as tears streamed down her cheeks. At just nineteen, she already felt like an outsider in Dylan’s high-society world, but tonight was a new level of humiliation.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors swung open. Dylan stepped in, his charcoal blazer slightly loosened, his expression shifting from party-host warmth to immediate concern. He looked at Hannah, then at his mother, Frances, who stood nearby in a shimmering teal satin dress, looking entirely unbothered.

"What's going on here?"

Dylan asked, his voice tight with rising anger. Frances scoffed, waving a manicured hand dismissively.

"Don't be so dramatic, Dylan. She just wanted to feel useful. Someone had to clear the dessert plates."

Dylan ignored his mother. He stepped up to Hannah, his eyes softening as he reached out to gently untie the rough grey apron wrapped around her waist.

"Look at me, Hannah,"

he murmured, lifting her chin.

"Did you really want to wash dishes during our party?"

Hannah looked up, her eyes red and swollen.

"No,"

she sobbed, her voice trembling.

"She told me that my place was in the kitchen because I'm just the mother of your daughter, not a real guest."

A dangerous silence fell over the room. Dylan's face hardened as he turned to Frances, pointing a trembling finger toward the exit.

"My party is over. Get out of my house."

Before Frances could even protest, Dylan pulled a sobbing Hannah into a tight, protective hug, sealing a rift that would soon tear his family apart.
