The nursery was supposed to be a sanctuary. Decorated in soft beige floral wallpaper, with a beautiful dark pine crib in the center, it was the one place in the house where Sarah felt completely at peace. She was gently rocking her newborn son, Toby, when the front door downstairs slammed shut with a force that rattled the windowpanes. Heavy, frantic footsteps pounded up the hardwood stairs, putting Sarah immediately on edge.

Before she could even place Toby down, the door burst open. It was Eleanor, her mother-in-law, wearing a navy blue sweatshirt and an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. Her face was flushed, her eyes wide with a dangerous intensity that Sarah had never seen before.

"You lying, manipulative snake!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with fury.

Sarah gasped, instinctively stepping back toward the crib. "Eleanor, please! Quiet down, you'll wake the baby! What is wrong with you?"

But Eleanor was past the point of reason. With a feral cry, she lunged across the pine crib, her fingers wrapping tightly into Sarah’s hair. She yanked Sarah’s head down violently. Sarah shrieked in pain, tears springing to her eyes as she clawed at her mother-in-law’s wrists. Toby began to wail in his crib, terrified by the screaming.

Just then, Justin, Sarah’s husband, appeared in the doorway. Wearing his forest green flannel, he took one look at the horrific scene and his face contorted in absolute shock. Without hesitation, he rushed forward, grabbing his mother by the shoulders and pulling her off Sarah with a powerful heave.

"Get out of here!" Justin roared, pointing a trembling finger toward the door. "Get out of my house right now!"

Eleanor stumbled back, panting, her eyes wild as she glared at the crying young mother.
