Previously: When Chloe was forced into the kitchen during her own family party, she didn't expect her husband to take such a drastic stand against his wealthy mother.

The Threat of Ruin

The silence that fell over the kitchen was deafening. Eleanor’s face contorted into a mask of pure disbelief. She had spent her entire life commanding rooms and dictating the lives of everyone around her. To be ordered out of her own son’s home—in front of the high-society guests she so desperately sought to impress—was a humiliation she could not tolerate. "How dare you speak to me that way, Justin!" she hissed, her voice trembling with rage. "I built this family. I fund your lifestyle. You would be nothing without me!"

But Justin stood like a wall between his mother and me, his arm wrapped protectively around my waist. "I said, get out," he repeated, his voice calm but unyielding. Eleanor glared at us both, her eyes burning with a promise of retribution. She turned on her heel and swept out of the house, taking the remaining guests with her in a flurry of whispers and slammed doors.

The next morning, the storm arrived in the form of a legal envelope. Eleanor didn't just want an apology; she wanted total destruction. She arrived at our house accompanied by her long-time family attorney. She bypassed me entirely, throwing a stack of financial documents onto our dining table.

"You think you can disrespect me and keep my money?" Eleanor sneered, looking directly at Justin. "If you do not divorce this girl and sign her out of our lives, I am freezing the family trust. I will cut off the funding for your business, and more importantly, I will dissolve the medical trust fund for your daughter, Lily."

My heart stopped. Our three-year-old daughter, Lily, had a rare medical condition that required expensive therapy, funded entirely by the trust Justin’s late father had set up. Eleanor was weaponizing our own daughter’s health to force us apart. I looked at Justin, my eyes pleading. "Justin, maybe I should just leave. We can't risk Lily's health," I whispered, terrified of the power his mother held over us.

I whispered, terrified of the power his mother held over us.
