Previously: When Clara saw her pristine wedding gown dragged through the wet mud of her future mother-in-law’s lawn, she knew the dark secret of her family's past had finally caught up with her.

The Sins of the Mother

The silence was finally broken when Evelyn raised the heavy framed picture, thrusting it toward Clara’s face. It was an old, faded photograph of a handsome man with a kind smile—Julian’s late father, Thomas, who had died in a tragic hit-and-run accident twenty years ago. Evelyn’s voice trembled with a mixture of grief and pure rage as she spoke over the sound of the pouring rain.

"You thought you could hide it from us, didn't you?" Evelyn spat, her eyes flashing. "I found your mother's old letters in your keepsake box. Your mother was the driver who killed my husband and fled the scene. You are the daughter of a murderer, Clara!"

Clara gasped, the cold rain suddenly feeling like ice water in her veins. The secret she had harbored in her heart for the last month had finally been dragged into the light. "She lied to you, Julian! She came into our lives to ease her own guilt, pretending to love you while carrying the blood of your father on her family's name! She doesn't deserve this dress, and she doesn't deserve you!"

Clara stood defenseless, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks, waiting for the man she loved to cast her out into the storm.
