The Uninvited Toast

The golden hour sun cast a warm, amber glow over the manicured lawn of the backyard reception. It was supposed to be the perfect day. Mark stood tall in his charcoal grey suit, his hand resting gently on the shoulder of eight-year-old Leo, who looked incredibly dapper in his tiny navy blazer. Beside them stood Sarah, radiant in her simple bridal gown, her face partially shaded by a chic, dark straw sunhat. They had opted for an intimate family gathering, hoping to avoid the dramatic outbursts that usually followed Mark’s mother, Eleanor.

But Eleanor, wrapped in a light cream-colored sweater that contrasted sharply with her icy demeanor, had other plans. For months, she had made no secret of her disdain for Sarah, whispering to anyone who would listen that the young mother was a scheming opportunist. Now, as the guests mingled, Eleanor stepped into the center of the lawn, a heavy bottle of expensive champagne gripped firmly in her hands.

"A toast!" Eleanor announced, her voice cutting through the laughter and soft music. "To my son, and his... mysterious new bride."

A tense silence fell over the yard. Mark’s posture stiffened. Before anyone could intervene, Eleanor triumphantly popped the cork. With a loud, explosive bang, a wild spray of pressurized champagne erupted from the bottle. The sticky liquid showered directly over Sarah, who quickly ducked in panic, her dark sunhat taking the brunt of the wet blast. Little Leo stood frozen beside her, his mouth wide open in absolute shock as the cold foam drenched his blazer.

Gasps echoed through the crowd. Mark’s face twisted in pure disbelief. Covering his eyes for a brief, agonizing second, he muttered a curse and rushed forward to shield his new family from his mother's apparent madness. But as he reached her, he saw that Eleanor wasn't laughing. Tears were streaming down her face, and her hands were trembling violently.
