A Mother's Long Nightmare

For three agonizing years, Sarah’s life had been a hollow shell of what it once was. Leo had vanished on his eighteenth birthday, leaving behind nothing but an empty bedroom and a brief, devastating note that read, You're better off without me. Sarah had spent every waking hour searching, filing police reports, and hiring private investigators, but the trail had gone cold. She had feared the worst, never imagining she would find her boy in a forgotten alleyway just blocks from her own office.

"Is it really you?" Sarah sobbed, holding Leo's face as if he might vanish if she let go. "Where have you been? Why did you leave us?"

Leo looked away, tears cutting clean paths through the grime on his cheeks.

"I couldn't come back, Mom," he choked out, his voice thick with shame. "I didn't think you wanted me here."

Emily stepped closer, her jaw dropping as the realization washed over her. The homeless stranger she had tried to feed was the older brother she had mourned for years.

"Leo? We never stopped looking for you! Why would you think we didn't want you?" Emily breathed, kneeling beside them.

Leo pulled his worn flannel jacket tighter around himself, looking down at the damp brick ground.

"Richard told me," he muttered, referring to Sarah’s ex-husband. "The night before I left, he told me that I was ruining your life, that you were planning to kick me out anyway because of my medical bills. He showed me a forged letter with your signature, Mom. It said you were tired of carrying my weight."

Sarah gasped, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces. She remembered the massive argument Leo had had with his stepfather, but she had never known about the forged letter or the cruel lies Richard had fed her son.

"Oh, sweetie, no," she cried, pulling him close again. "That was a lie! I divorced Richard two months after you disappeared because I found out how cruel he was. I would have given up everything for you!"
