The alleyway seemed to stand still as Sarah held the young man, sobbing uncontrollably. Emily looked between her weeping mother and the bewildered young man, her mind racing. She had grown up hearing stories about her older half-brother, Leo, who had mysteriously vanished five years ago when she was just sixteen. Sarah had never stopped searching, spending every penny of her savings on private investigators, but the trail had gone completely cold.

Leo stood rigid at first, his body tense, but as the familiar scent of his mother’s perfume reached him, his shoulders slumped, and he began to cry quietly, burying his face in her shoulder.

"Leo, is it really you?" Emily whispered, her voice trembling as tears welled in her own eyes. "We thought you were..."

"I'm here, Emily," Leo choked out, looking at his younger sister.

Once the initial shock subsided, Sarah helped Leo to his feet, refusing to let go of his hand. They went to a quiet diner nearby, where Leo devoured his food while Sarah watched him with protective, devouring eyes, terrified he might vanish again if she blinked.

"It was Richard," Leo revealed, his voice shaking as he spoke of Sarah’s ex-husband, Emily's father. "He told me if I didn't leave, he would ruin your life, Mom. He threatened to frame me for a crime I didn't commit, and he paid off people to make sure I could never come back."

Sarah gasped, clutching her chest. Richard had always disliked Leo, but she had never imagined the depth of his cruelty.
