The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. David comforted a weeping Chloe, wrapping her in his arms while glaring at his mother. Margaret sat on the edge of the sofa, her face pale, her hands shaking violently. She kept pointing at the smashed cake on the floor, mumbling incoherent syllables. David was convinced his mother was either suffering a severe mental breakdown or acting out of pure malice. Sarah looked at the ruined cake on the floor, then at Margaret, and finally at David. "David, oh my god," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Where did you get this cake? Did Chloe eat any of it?" David shook his head, confused by his wife's sudden panic. Sarah held up the receipt, pointing to a handwritten note from the baker that had been overlooked. The cake contained crushed walnut paste—an ingredient that would trigger an immediate, fatal anaphylactic shock in Chloe, who carried a severe, life-threatening tree nut allergy.
