As Chloe writhed on the pavement, screaming profanities, several onlookers finally rushed forward to help Mark hold her down until the police arrived. Clara sat on the curb, clutching Lily to her chest, her light blue dress stained with dirt and blood. She was shaking uncontrollably, her head throbbing from the brutal strikes.

The Ghost on the Screen

Mark knelt beside Clara, offering his jacket to cover her shivering shoulders. He spoke in a calm, soothing voice, trying to ground her from the panic. While he was comforting Clara, he noticed an expensive smartphone lying on the pavement, having slipped from Chloe's denim jacket during the tackle. The screen was lit up with urgent, incoming text messages.

Out of instinct, Mark picked up the device to hand it to the arriving police officers. But as his eyes brushed the screen, his breath hitched. A series of messages from a contact named "Julian" were popping up in rapid succession.

"Did you get the papers from Clara yet? Make sure she signs them. If she doesn't, force her. We need that money to leave the country before the audit," the message read.

Clara, catching her breath, looked over at the phone in Mark's hand. When she saw the sender's name and the profile picture, her face went completely pale, draining of all remaining color. She gripped Mark's arm so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"That... that's impossible," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "Julian is my husband. He died in a tragic car accident six months ago. I buried him!"

The realization hit Clara like a physical blow. Chloe was not a random madwoman, nor was she just an envious stranger. She was Julian's secret mistress. The police officers approached, handcuffing a still-screaming Chloe, but Clara could barely hear them over the roaring in her ears. Her husband's death had been a lie, a massive insurance scam engineered to strip Clara and her daughter of their home and livelihood, leaving them with nothing while Julian and Chloe started a new life abroad.
