The afternoon sun beat down on the manicured lawns of Oakridge, casting long, peaceful shadows across the driveway. To any outsider, Mark and Lily were the picture of devotion. For two years, Mark had dedicated every waking hour to caring for his young wife, whose legs had supposedly been paralyzed in a tragic fall just weeks before their wedding. But on this warm Tuesday, that peaceful facade was shattered forever. Clara, Mark’s mother, stood on the front lawn wearing her sharp, dark blue business suit. She didn't look like a woman about to garden; she looked like a woman on a mission. With a cold, unyielding expression, Clara grabbed the heavy brass nozzle of the garden hose and turned it full blast, aiming the freezing jet of water directly at Lily, who sat helpless in her wheelchair.

The water hit Lily with a wet, heavy force. She gasped, shielding her face as the spray soaked her hair and clothes. Just then, Mark slammed his car door and ran up the driveway, his black polo shirt damp with sweat, his face twisted in pure horror.

"What are you doing?!" Mark screamed, his voice cracking with fury as he tried to shield his wife.
"I'm washing her," Clara replied, her voice eerily calm and steady as she kept the stream of water targeted on Lily.
"Have you lost your mind?!" Mark yelled, lunging to grab the hose from his mother's grip.
"That's what I thought the first time I saw her walk," Clara said coldly.

Before Mark could process his mother's bizarre words, a gasp escaped his throat. Lily, shivering and distraught, suddenly gripped the armrests of her wheelchair. With a fluid, effortless motion, she pushed herself up. She stood on her own two feet, completely stable, and began to run toward the porch, completely forgetting her act in her panic to escape the freezing water. Mark froze, his hands trembling as he stared at the empty wheelchair, his world completely spinning.
