Previously: When a young waitress wears her mother's vintage jade pendant to a high-society gala, she has no idea it will cause the host to collapse in sheer terror.

The Secret in the Study

The elegant ballroom quickly emptied as security and medical staff rushed to Helen's side. Audrey stood frozen, clutching her empty tray as the whispers of the elite echoed around her. Within minutes, Helen's personal security guard approached Audrey and quietly requested that she follow him. Terrified of losing her job—or worse, being blamed for the matriarch's medical emergency—Audrey complied, holding her mother's jade pendant tightly in her hand.

She was led to a quiet, wood-paneled study on the second floor. A few minutes later, the door opened, and a frail-looking Helen entered, supported by her personal assistant. Helen dismissed the staff, leaving her alone with Audrey. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by the ticking of a grandfather clock.

"Please, sit down," Helen said, her voice now devoid of its former sharpness, replaced instead by a profound sadness. "I owe you an apology, and an explanation."

Audrey sat hesitantly on the edge of a leather armchair. "Ma'am, I don't understand. Why did my mother's name shock you so much? Did you know her?"

Helen stared at the jade pendant once more, tears welling in her eyes.

"I did know her, Audrey. Because Marion Calder was my daughter," Helen confessed, her voice trembling. "And that pendant was a family heirloom I gave her on her eighteenth birthday."

Audrey’s breath caught in her throat. Her mother had always told her that she had no living family, that they had grown up poor and isolated. To find out that her mother was the daughter of one of the wealthiest socialites in the state was a truth too massive to comprehend.

"But why did she leave?" Audrey asked, her voice barely a whisper. "Why did she hide from you?"

Helen bowed her head, the weight of a twenty-five-year-old guilt finally crashing down upon her. She began to explain the dark secret that had torn their family apart.
