Previously: When a young server wears her late mother's jade pendant to a high-society gala, she has no idea it will cause the city's wealthiest matriarch to collapse in sheer horror.

The Secret in the Private Suite

Within minutes, paramedics rushed Eleanor to a private VIP suite upstairs, away from the prying eyes of the media and the gossiping guests. Sarah, trembling and confused, was ordered by her manager to wait in the hallway. She clutched the jade pendant tightly, wondering how a simple heirloom could cause such a violent reaction in a woman who ruled the city's elite.

Just as Sarah was about to slip away and go home, the double doors opened. Eleanor’s personal physician stepped out, looking grave. "She is conscious, and she is demanding to see the girl with the jade necklace," he said, gesturing to Sarah.

With hesitant steps, Sarah entered the dimly lit room. Eleanor was propped up on a velvet sofa, looking frail and stripped of her formidable armor. When she saw Sarah enter, tears welled in her sharp gray eyes.

"Come closer, child,"

Eleanor pleaded, her voice devoid of its earlier coldness.

"Please."

Sarah stood at the foot of the sofa, keeping her distance.

"Why did my mother's name shock you so much?"

she demanded, her voice stronger now.

"Who are you?"

Eleanor closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her cheek.

"Marion Calder was my daughter,"

she whispered.

"My only daughter. And you... you must be my granddaughter."

The revelation hit Sarah like a physical blow. Her mother had never spoken of her family, only warning Sarah that the wealthy elite of the city were heartless and cruel.

"Twenty-five years ago, Marion fell in love with a young artist,"

Eleanor confessed, her voice thick with regret.

"I refused to allow it. I threatened to disown her, to ruin his career, to make their lives a living hell if she didn't leave him. I thought I was protecting our family name. Instead, I drove my daughter away forever. The night she left, she took only that jade pendant—a gift from her grandmother. I spent decades searching for her, but she had vanished."
