Previously: Hiding in a dark, wet scrapyard with her daughter, Amanda prays the flashlights won't find them. But the police aren't trying to rescue her—they're hiding a devastating truth.

The Corrupt Alliance

Just forty-eight hours ago, Amanda’s life had been normal. But that was before her husband, David, an investigative journalist, died in what the police quickly ruled a tragic highway accident. Amanda knew it was no accident. David had spent months uncovering a massive money-laundering scheme that tied the town’s mayor directly to Chief Henderson—the very man who commanded the officers currently searching the scrapyard.

Before David left for his final, fatal meeting, he had slipped a small, black flash drive into the lining of Emily’s beloved stuffed bear, which was now zipped tightly inside her yellow raincoat. "If anything happens to me, Amanda, take this to the federal prosecutor in the city," he had warned her. "Don't trust anyone in local uniform."

Now, the boots grew closer. Amanda held her breath as Deputy Miller, a man she had seen at community barbecues, paused just on the other side of the rusted fender. The beam of his flashlight cut through the broken window of the station wagon, illuminating the interior just inches from Amanda's head.

"Amanda! We know you're scared, but you need to come out! We just want to help you!"

Miller shouted, his voice dripping with false concern. Amanda’s grip on Emily tightened. She knew that if they found her, she and Emily would meet the same "accidental" fate as David. Suddenly, Emily shifted, her small boot scraping against a loose piece of sheet metal. The sharp screech echoed through the quiet yard. Miller froze, his flashlight instantly snapping toward their exact position.
