Previously: Marcus spent seven agonizing years mourning his late wife, Sarah. But a chance encounter with a little girl holding a familiar photograph changes everything he thought he knew.

The Shadow of the Past

Marcus stood up, his legs feeling like lead, and began to walk toward the figure in white. The little girl, whose name was Lily, held his hand tightly, guiding him through the golden haze. As they drew closer, the woman turned around. It was indeed Sarah. She looked older, her face bearing a faint scar near her temple, but her eyes were the same deep pools of amber that Marcus had fallen in love with. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered his name.

But before Marcus could embrace her, a man stepped out from the shadow of a nearby alley. Marcus’s blood ran cold. It was Arthur Pendelton, his former business partner who had vanished shortly after Sarah's supposed death. Arthur’s face was twisted into a triumphant, cold smirk. He stepped directly between Marcus and Sarah, pulling a heavy document from his coat pocket.

"You're too late, Marcus," Arthur sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "She belongs to me now. If you take one step closer, I will release these documents to the authorities, and Sarah will spend the rest of her life in a federal prison."

As the pieces began to fall into place, Marcus listened in horror to Arthur's twisted confession. Seven years ago, Arthur had embezzled millions from their shared firm, framing Marcus. When Sarah discovered the truth, Arthur forced her off the road, staging the accident. He hadn't killed her; instead, he had rescued her from the river, keeping her isolated under a false identity, threatening to ruin Marcus and send her to jail for the embezzlement using forged signatures if she ever tried to contact him. Lily was born in captivity—Marcus’s daughter, whom he never knew existed.

Arthur’s ultimatum was simple: leave Savannah forever, or watch both Sarah and Lily be destroyed by the fabricated evidence he held. Marcus looked at his weeping wife, then down at the innocent daughter holding his hand, feeling utterly helpless.
