Previously: A foster child's trembling hands shield a music locket that holds the key to his true identity. But when a billionaire couple discovers the truth, will it be enough to save him in time?

As the Officers Dragged Carl Away, His Smile Told Me This Was Far From Over

The parlor was chaos—officers shouting, Camille sobbing, Noah clinging to Dominic like he might disappear. But all I could see was Carl's smile, that sickening curl of his lips as they shoved him through the door.

I stepped forward, my reporter's instincts firing. "Wait. He's hiding something."

The officers paused, looking at me with confusion. "Ma'am, we have him on child abuse charges. That's enough."

"No," I said, my voice firm. "He knew about the locket. He knew who Noah was. He's been hiding this child on purpose."

Dominic turned to me, his eyes sharp. "What do you mean?"

I pulled out my phone, scrolling to a message I'd received earlier that morning—an anonymous tip about a foster home with "irregularities." It had led me here, to Fernwood, just in time to witness the impossible.

"The tip said to check the adoption records," I explained. "Someone wanted this to come to light."

Camille's face went pale. "Adoption records?"

I nodded, already dialing my contact at the county clerk's office. Twenty minutes later, a courier arrived with a thick file—the full history of Noah's placement.

And what we found made Dominic's face turn to stone.

"A signed adoption transfer," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "Dated three months ago. Giving Carl Morrow full custody of Noah."

"That's impossible," Camille breathed. "We've been searching for Noah for eight years. We never gave up custody."

"The signature is yours," I said, pointing at the bottom of the page. "Both yours and Dominic's. But look at the date—it's the same week you were in Europe for the Mercer Foundation gala."

Dominic's jaw tightened. "We were photographed in Paris that night. There's no way we signed anything."

"Someone forged your signatures," I said. "And they had access to your private documents."

Camille gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "My brother. He handled our estate paperwork back then. He said Noah was stillborn—that the hospital made a mistake."

"Your brother?" I repeated, my mind racing.

"Richard," Dominic said, his voice cold. "He was the only one with access to our safe. He always resented that Noah would inherit the Mercer fortune before his own children."

Noah had been watching us, his small hand clutching Dominic's sleeve. "So... my uncle did this?"

Camille knelt in front of him, cupping his face in her hands. "Your uncle lied to us, sweetheart. But we're here now. We found you."

"But Carl," Noah whispered, trembling. "He said if I ever told anyone about the locket, he'd burn it. He said my mother didn't want me."

Camille pulled him into her arms, tears streaming down her face. "Oh, my baby. Your mother wanted you more than anything in this world."

I watched the reunion, my heart aching. But a question gnawed at me.

"If Richard forged the adoption," I said slowly, "then Carl isn't just a foster parent. He's a pawn. Someone higher up is pulling the strings."

Dominic's eyes darkened. "Richard always did have a knack for finding desperate people and using them."

"But why keep Noah alive?" I pressed. "If they wanted him gone, they could have—" I stopped, not wanting to say the words in front of the child.

"Because the Mercer fortune is tied to a bloodline trust," Dominic said, his voice grim. "If Noah dies without an heir, the money goes to Richard's branch. But if Noah lives—even hidden away—the trust stays with him. They needed him alive, but out of sight."

My stomach churned. "So Carl was paid to keep him as a secret prisoner."

"And to make sure he never knew who he was," Camille added, her voice shaking with rage.

Noah looked up at me, his eyes wide. "Are you going to write about this?"

I knelt down, meeting his gaze. "I'm going to make sure the whole world knows the truth, sweetheart. No one is going to hurt you again."

But even as I said it, I saw Carl's smile again in my mind. And I knew this wasn't over.

Richard Mercer was still out there. And if he found out we had the locket, he'd come for Noah.

I just didn't know how fast.
