The afternoon sun beat down on the manicured lawns of the botanical gardens, casting a golden glow over the hundreds of white roses decorating the reception. It was a picture-perfect high-society wedding, the kind where every guest wore their wealth on their sleeve. For my cousin Victoria, it was the ultimate stage.

She spotted my husband Arthur and me standing near the champagne fountain. Arthur stood calmly beside me, his hands resting easily in his pockets. He didn't flinch, nor did he offer a defensive reply. His quiet confidence only seemed to fuel Victoria’s arrogance.

"Charles! Darling, come over here!" Victoria called out, waving her hand toward her husband, who was talking to a group of local politicians.
