Previously: He thought I was still the same desperate girl. He was about to learn just how wrong he was when the President himself called me.

Suddenly, the tranquil, amber-lit lounge exploded into chaos. High-intensity red and blue strobe lights pulsed through the rain-lashed windows, illuminating a scene of escalating urgency. A six-vehicle presidential motorcade, a phalanx of armored black Suburbans, screeched onto the VIP tarmac curb. Heavy doors slammed open in unison, and federal agents, clad in rain-slicked trench coats, burst through the terminal doors, weapons drawn at a low ready. Airport directors scrambled, parting the velvet ropes as if for royalty. Damian Knox, who moments before had been exuding smug confidence, froze. His entitled smirk faltered, replaced by a look of paralyzed shock. His eyes widened in sheer bewilderment as he swallowed hard, a dry, panicked sound in the sudden noise. A towering, broad-shouldered figure emerged from the agents: Agent Miller, the Secret Service detail leader. He wore a tailored black suit, a coiled acoustic earpiece, and a presidential lapel pin glinted on his lapel. He barked orders with booming tactical authority: “Federal perimeter secure! Clear the corridor for the Director immediately!” His gaze swept the room, bypassing Damian entirely, and landed squarely on me. Miller and three senior federal agents halted directly in front of me, snapping into rigid, synchronized salutes. It was then that Damian truly began to crumble. Miller unlatched a heavy titanium briefcase, embossed with the Presidential Seal. He held forth a secure red satellite communicator, its screen displaying incoming encrypted presidential clearance. Damian stumbled back, the crystal tumbler of scotch slipping from his trembling fingers. It hit the polished marble floor with a concussive shattering sound, liquid splashing outwards like a dark stain.

Agent Miller: “Federal perimeter secure! Clear the corridor for the Director immediately!”

Agent Miller’s voice softened, imbued with deep military deference as he addressed me. “Director Vance, Air Force One has cleared your direct flight corridor. The President is standing by in the Situation Room for your briefing.” Director Vance. My name, spoken with such gravity, struck Damian like a physical blow. He stared, his jaw slack in petrified horror, his skin draining of all color. Beads of cold sweat formed across his brow. He had assumed I was still the same struggling graduate, the one he felt entitled to pity and belittle. He never imagined I would rise to a position where the President of the United States would personally await my briefing. The sheer magnitude of his miscalculation, the depth of his arrogance, crashed down upon him. The hundred-dollar bill, still crushed in my fist, felt like a symbol of his pathetic attempt to buy my dignity. As the agents formed a protective cordon around me, Damian was left standing amidst the glittering shards of his shattered ego and his expensive scotch, a monument to his own spectacular downfall.
