Previously: Bound to a wheelchair, Lily thought her life was over until her best friend Toby tried an unusual remedy—unlocking a dark family secret her stepfather desperately tried to hide.

The Hidden Vial

Before Toby could celebrate, David descended upon us like a storm. He grabbed Toby by the shoulder, shoving him away from my basin with unexpected force.

"Get away from her!" David snarled, his eyes wild with panic. "You have no medical training! You could cause irreversible damage to her fragile nerves!"

Toby stood his ground, his green t-shirt stained with dirt but his chest puffed out with defiance.

"If her nerves are dead, Mr. Vance, why did she just react?" Toby demanded, pointing at my twitching toes. "She felt the warmth. She felt the pressure! She isn't permanently paralyzed!"

David's face twisted into a mask of pure rage. He ordered Toby off the property immediately, threatening to call the police for trespassing. As David forcefully wheeled me back toward the house, a small, dark blue glass vial slipped out of his blazer pocket, tumbling silently into the thick grass. Toby, quick-eyed and suspicious, swiftly snatched it up before my stepfather could notice.

Once inside, David locked me in my bedroom, confiscating my phone and claiming Toby was a dangerous influence who was filling my head with delusions. But I knew what I had felt. That night, my bedroom window creaked open. Toby climbed inside, holding a sheet of paper. His face was pale, his eyes wide with horror.

"Lily, I had my cousin test the residue in that vial," Toby whispered, his voice trembling. "It’s a highly concentrated, synthetic neurotoxin. It mimics symptoms of progressive paralysis. Lily... David has been slipping this into your daily vitamin shakes."

The truth hit me like a physical blow. My mother’s massive estate was left entirely to me, with David as the sole executor—but only as long as I remained incapacitated and under his guardianship. If I recovered, the trust fund would transfer directly to me, leaving him penniless.

Suddenly, the bedroom door clicked. It swung open to reveal David standing in the doorway, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker. The mask of the loving stepfather was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, murderous glare.
