Previously: Confined to a wheelchair for years, Lily thought she would never walk again. But when her younger brother Toby brings home a mysterious bucket of water, a dark family secret begins to unravel.

A Father's Dark Betrayal

My father reached us, out of breath, his face twisted in a mixture of panic and fury. He immediately tried to shove Toby away from the bucket. "What do you think you're doing?" David roared, his voice booming across the manicured lawn. "Get away from her! You're going to hurt her!"

But Toby stood his ground, stepping between our father and my wheelchair. He pulled a crumpled medical dossier from his pocket, his knuckles white. "I know what you've been doing, Dad," Toby shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. "I found the real files in your study safe. Lily's nerves were only bruised. She was supposed to walk years ago!"

My heart stopped. I looked from my brother's furious face to my father's suddenly pale expression. The silence on the lawn was deafening. Toby held up the papers, shaking them in the air.

"You've been putting nerve-suppressing drugs in her morning tea every single day," Toby revealed, tears streaming down his face. "The doctors you hired were actors. You did this to keep her dependent, so you could control the multi-million dollar trust fund Mom left exclusively for her when she turned eighteen!"

I stared at my father, waiting for him to laugh, to call it a ridiculous lie. But David couldn't look me in the eye. He took a slow step toward me, his hands raised in a placating gesture.

"Lily, sweetheart, you don't understand," David stammered, his confident voice reduced to a pathetic whisper. "The market crashed, and I was going to lose everything. I did it to keep our family afloat. I was going to stop once we were stable, I swear!"

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The man who had tucked me in, who had comforted me when I cried about my useless legs, was the very monster who had kept me paralyzed. The herbal mixture Toby had brewed was a natural detoxifier he had researched to counteract the daily drugs. For the first time in five years, my toes wiggled beneath the water.
