Previously: When eleven-year-old Harper begged her father Daniel to leave the carnival immediately, he expected a childhood tantrum—but the secret waiting in their station wagon changed their family forever.

The Secret in the Trunk

Harper led Daniel to the back of the station wagon. With trembling hands, she pulled open the heavy trunk door. Beneath a pile of old picnic blankets and jumper cables lay a worn leather duffel bag. But as Daniel leaned closer, he noticed the bag was gently shifting. Harper reached down and carefully slid the zipper open, revealing a sight that made Daniel’s breath catch in his throat.

A little girl, no older than three, was curled inside. She had large, amber-colored eyes and a mop of curly blonde hair, clutching a tattered teddy bear to her chest. She looked remarkably like Harper had at that age. Pinned to her faded denim jacket was a folded piece of paper. Daniel reached for it with numb fingers, recognizing the elegant, hurried handwriting instantly. It was Sarah’s.

"Daniel, please protect Lily. She is your daughter. I had to run to keep her safe from them. They are tracing me. Do not go back to your house. I love you."

The words swam before Daniel's eyes. Sarah had given birth to another daughter—his daughter—and was now running for her life. Before he could process the overwhelming shock, the gravel crunched behind them. A sleek black SUV with tinted windows pulled into the isolated corner of the lot, its high beams flashing on, blinding them in the dusk.

A tall man in a dark overcoat stepped out of the vehicle. His expression was cold and calculated as he walked toward them, his eyes locking onto the bundle in the trunk.

"Hand over the child, Daniel," the man said, his voice smooth and threatening. "This doesn't have to get ugly. Your wife made a big mistake, but you don't have to pay for it."

Harper whimpered, shielding the toddler with her own body. Daniel stood tall, placing himself directly between his daughters and the approaching threat, his mind racing for a way out.
