The lead man lowered his flashlight slightly, revealing a tired, weathered face. He held up a badge, but it wasn't a police badge—it was a private security credential. "Mr. Vance, please calm down," the man said, his tone surprisingly respectful. "My name is Marcus. Your ex-wife, Sarah, hired our agency to escort Leo safely to this fairground to meet you. But the boy got scared and ran away from us three days ago. We've been looking for him ever since to ensure his safety."

Thomas stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. There were no bad guys chasing them; Sarah had set up a protective detail to ensure their son reached him safely. Marcus explained that Sarah was now safe in a federal protection program, but she wanted Leo to grow up with the father who would love him unconditionally.
