The walk back to the house was suffocating. Chloe remained entirely silent, her cane tapping erratically against the pavement. The moment they stepped inside, she retreated to her bedroom and locked the door. Robert stood in the hallway, the silence of the house pressing in on him. He called his wife, Sarah, repeatedly, but each call went straight to voicemail. The seed of doubt planted by Toby was growing rapidly, choking his peace of mind.

Two agonizing hours later, Sarah's car pulled into the driveway. When she entered the kitchen, she looked exhausted, tossing her keys onto the counter with a heavy sigh. Robert stood by the dining table, his face pale and set in a hard line.

"We need to talk," Robert said, his voice dangerously calm.

Sarah barely looked at him. "Not now, Robert. I've had a brutal day at the clinic. We can talk at dinner."

"A kid on the street stopped us today," Robert continued, ignoring her dismissive tone. "He told me Chloe isn't blind. And then he told me to ask you."

Sarah froze. The color drained from her face, and her shoulders went rigid. She slowly turned to face him, a forced, nervous laugh escaping her lips. "That is ridiculous. Toby is a troubled kid, Robert. You shouldn't listen to neighborhood gossip."

But Robert knew his wife. He saw the panic in her eyes, the way her hands trembled as she gripped the edge of the counter. Before he could demand the truth, the sound of a door clicking open echoed through the house. Chloe walked out of her bedroom.

She wasn't wearing her sunglasses. Her eyes, clear and perfectly focused, were filled with tears as she looked directly at her mother.

"Tell him, Mom," Chloe sobbed, her voice cracking with emotion. "Tell him the truth, or I will."
