Previously: When a neighborhood boy accuses Paul's blind daughter of faking her condition, a devastating web of lies unravels, exposing a shocking betrayal from the person Paul trusted most.

Unearthing the Truth

The walk back to the house was a blur of deafening silence. Maya stumbled twice, but when Paul reached out to steady her, she flinched away from his touch. The moment they crossed the threshold, Paul’s wife, Sarah, greeted them from the kitchen. She smiled warmly, but her eyes darted nervously between Paul’s pale face and Maya’s stiff posture. Before she could speak, Paul confronted her with Wyatt's words. Sarah immediately laughed it off, calling Wyatt a troubled child, but her trembling hands betrayed her panic.

Determined to find the truth, Paul bypassed his pleading wife and walked straight into Maya’s bedroom. He began searching, driven by a desperate, frantic instinct. Underneath Maya’s mattress, his hand brushed against something hard. He pulled it out—a thick, leather-bound sketchbook. When Paul opened it, his heart stopped. The pages were covered in beautiful, intricate pencil drawings of the neighborhood, the local park, and, on the final page, a highly detailed portrait of Paul himself, dated just three days ago. A blind girl could never have drawn this.

Trembling, Paul walked back into the living room, holding the sketchbook open. Sarah gasped, backing away as if looking at a ghost. Maya stood in the center of the room, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"Why, Maya?" Paul whispered, his heart breaking into a million pieces. "Why did you lie to me?"

Maya reached up and slowly pulled off her sunglasses, revealing clear, perfectly focused eyes that were brimming with tears. She looked directly at Paul for the first time in two years.

"Because she told me you hated me," Maya cried out, pointing a shaking finger at Sarah. "She told me you blamed me for the car accident, and that if I wasn't sick, you would have abandoned us. She said pretending to be blind was the only way to make you stay!"

Paul turned to Sarah, his chest tightening with pure horror as the depth of his wife's malice was laid bare.
