Previously: For a year, Michael believed his daughter Ella was blind. But a sudden street confrontation with a neighbor boy unravels a web of lies spun by the woman he trusted most.

The Secret in the Bedroom

The walk back to the house was silent. Ella refused to speak, keeping her head bowed. When they arrived, Michael's wife, Sarah, greeted them warmly, but Michael could only see the suspicious scratch on Caleb's face in his mind. He decided to test his doubts. Pretending he had an emergency shift at work, Michael left the house, only to sneak back in through the rear door ten minutes later.

He crept up the stairs, his heart pounding in his chest. When he reached Ella's bedroom, the door was slightly open. Peering inside, Michael’s breath caught in his throat. Ella’s dark sunglasses were on the desk. She was sitting on her bed, holding a paperback book, her eyes moving rapidly across the printed pages. She was reading.

A floorboard creaked under Michael's foot. Ella gasped, dropping the book as her eyes locked directly onto his. There was no blindness in her gaze—only sheer terror.

"Dad," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Tears streamed down Michael’s face as he pushed the door open.

"Why, Ella?" he sobbed. "Why have you been pretending for a whole year?"

Before Ella could answer, the door swung wider. Sarah stood in the doorway, her warm demeanor vanishing, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. She shut the door behind her.

"She had to do it, Michael," Sarah said, her voice chillingly calm. "It was the only way to secure the half-million-dollar insurance settlement from the accident. If she recovers, we get nothing."

Michael stared at his wife in absolute horror. Sarah had forced his daughter to live in a dark lie for money. But the nightmare escalated when Sarah stepped closer, her eyes flashing with malice.

"And don't think about playing the hero," Sarah hissed. "I signed your name on the fraudulent medical claims. If I go down, you go to prison with me, and Ella goes to foster care."
