Robert stared at the silver locket in Lily's trembling palm. His breath hitched as she pressed the tiny clasp, popping the heart open. Inside was not a photo of Clara, but a faded picture of Elena, Clara's younger sister. Elena had vanished shortly after Lily was born, and Robert had been told she had tragically passed away in an institution overseas. He had raised Lily believing Clara was her biological mother who died of illness.

"A woman at the ring-toss game gave this to me," Lily sobbed, her voice cutting through the distant carnival music. "She told me she's my real mother, Dad. She said you and Grandma lied to me my whole life."

Before Robert could find the words to respond, a shadow fell over the gravel parking lot. He looked up to see a woman standing just a few feet away, illuminated by the harsh glare of a nearby streetlamp. She had the same striking red hair as Lily, and her eyes were filled with a mixture of intense pain and burning anger. It was Elena.

"You told her I was dead, Robert?" Elena asked, her voice trembling but resolute. "You let your mother banish me and take my baby, and you never even looked for me?"

The accusation hung heavily in the cool night air. Robert stood paralyzed as the pieces of a decade-old puzzle began to fall into place. His mother, a wealthy and domineering woman, had handled all of Clara's medical bills and the adoption details. He had trusted his mother blindly when she told him Elena had abandoned the baby and died shortly after. Now, looking at Elena’s living, breathing form, he realized the monstrous depth of his mother's deception.

"Elena... I swear to you, I didn't know," Robert whispered, his voice cracking. "My mother told me you were gone."
